Understanding Thailand’s Cannabis Rules Before You Visit

Thailand’s cannabis shops remain highly visible in some tourist areas, but their presence does not mean visitors have unrestricted access. As checked on 23 October 2026, official guidance restricts cannabis to medical purposes and requires a prescription issued in Thailand. Older accounts of casual purchases can therefore give travellers the wrong impression about what is permitted during a visit.

For anyone asking is cannabis legal in Thailand, the useful distinction is between authorised medical access and recreational use. The Tourism Authority of Thailand advises visitors to check with licensed medical providers and official sources rather than assume a displayed product is lawful to purchase.

Buying cannabis flower

Official guidance requires a valid prescription from an authorised practitioner in Thailand, with the quantity limited to medical need and a maximum treatment supply of 30 days. This is not an allowance automatically available to every visitor. A foreign prescription should not be assumed to meet the requirement for documentation issued locally. Eligibility for treatment is a matter for the practitioner assessing the patient, rather than something established by a visitor’s age or length of stay.

The seller’s authority matters as well. A storefront, online listing or offer of delivery does not establish that a transaction meets the rules. The Royal Thai Embassy’s guidance identifies online and vending-machine sales as prohibited channels. Medical assessment and the seller’s legal authorisation are separate parts of the arrangement.

Carrying and using it during your stay

The Tourism Authority’s notice also covers buying, possessing, carrying and using cannabis flower without the required prescription. Medical access should not be interpreted as permission to use it wherever you choose. Australia’s Smartraveller guidance states that cannabis cannot be used in public, while accommodation providers may impose their own restrictions. Confirm the permitted arrangements with the treating practitioner and the property rather than relying on what other guests appear to do.

Leaving Thailand with cannabis

A domestic medical prescription does not authorise export. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office states that taking cannabis out of Thailand requires the appropriate permission from the authorities. The country you enter or transit through has its own rules, which apply independently of any Thai documentation.

This includes small quantities left over at the end of a stay. Do not treat a small amount as an ordinary souvenir or assume that hand luggage is treated differently from checked baggage. Check the contents of both before departure, including items packed earlier in the trip.

Checking information before travelling

Read the publication date alongside the rule being described. A page explaining Thailand’s 2022 policy change may remain online without reflecting the later medical framework. Advice about flower also should not be transferred automatically to extracts, medicines or other products, whose classification and documentation may differ.

For a proposed medical treatment, obtain the practitioner’s details and ask which documents accompany it. Keep the prescription with the relevant product information during the stay. If you already use a cannabis-based medicine, check its exact ingredients against Thai FDA traveller guidance before packing it, since bringing medicine across the border is a separate question from obtaining treatment after arrival.
