What Causes Clear Semen?

Clear or watery semen can be a sign of low sperm count, indicating possible fertility problems. Ejaculating thin, clear semen may also be a temporary condition with no serious health concerns. The quality of a man’s semen is a good indicator of health. Most men will release a thick, creamy fluid during an orgasm.

What Causes Clear Semen

Oligospermia

oligospermia is a sperm pathology that leads to male infertility. Oligospermia can be mild, moderate, or severe depending on the sperm count, that is, the number of sperms present in the ejaculate. A thin texture to the semen is also a potential indication of a low sperm count, particularly if it is ejaculated without its customarily coagulated consistency. Low sperm count is a clinical term used for men whose semen doesn’t contain the usual number of sperm by volume. A normal count is between 20 to 150 million sperm cells per milliliter (7 grams) of sperm. Types of oligospermia:

  • Mild oligospermia

When the number of spermatozoa found in the semen sample ranges between 14 and 5 million sperm per milliliter.

  • Moderate oligospermia

The sample contains between 5 and 1 million sperm/ml. Great improvements can be achieved in these cases following the proper treatment and a healthy lifestyle for a few months. The semen analysis would be repeated after this timeframe.

  • Severe oligospermia

When the number of spermatozoa found isless than 1 million sperm/ml are found. Pregnancy could be achieved only by means of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

Some causes of oligospermia include:

  • Varicocele: A varicocele is a swelling of veins from the testicles in the scrotum.
  • Infection: sexually transmitted disease such as gonorrhea or another kind of infection that causes inflammation of a reproductive organ, such as epididymitis.
  • Malignant and benign tumors in the testicles may affect sperm production.
  • Hormone imbalances: Hormones produced in the testicles, pituitary gland, and hypothalamus is all necessary to produce healthy sperm counts. Changes in any of these hormones could affect sperm production.

Pre-ejaculation

Very clear semen may actually be pre-ejaculation fluid that’s released during foreplay. It typically contains few sperm.

Implications for Fertility

If semen is consistently clear for a year and a couple is unable to conceive a child, it is possible the man is suffering from what is known as primary infertility.

Insufficient sperm count

Often ejaculating in one sexual encounter is the most common cause. To avoid ejaculating watery semen due to lack of sperm in this case, wait for more than 5 hours to restore the rich sperm volume before the second time of ejaculation.

Sexual Immaturity

Sexual maturity in boys usually begins around age 11, and in most cases boys will experience their first ejaculation around age 13. In most cases this is perfectly normal and is not a cause for concern. As they grow older, their reproductive system develops and the semen will become white and thicker.

Fructose deficiency

Diet and over-exercising are the two main factors that lead to this condition, the simple solution is to eat more fruit and vegetables to get enough fructose for your body.

Zinc deficiency

Another possible cause of watery semen is a zinc deficiency. Research has shown that men who have adequate levels of zinc or men who are deficient in zinc and take zinc sulfate supplements can better fight off the effects of anti-sperm antibodies.

Ejaculating into Bladder

Retrograde ejaculation is a medical condition in which sperm doesn’t exit through the urethra during orgasm. Retrograde ejaculation typically isn’t life-threatening, but it can affect fertility.

Habit and Environment

Where you work, what you eat, and what you drink can affect the quality of your semen. In fact, if you smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol all the time, it could also affect the quality of your semen.

Is watery semen bad? The answer is not always. There are several factors that affect semen consistency and most of them are normal and harmless. Semen is the fluid that men release when they reach their climax. The differences between clear and white semen:

  • Clear or watery semen is released as a pre-cum or pre-ejaculation fluid during foreplay. During an orgasm, men will typically release white and viscous semen.
  • White semen has high amounts of sperm cells. These cells are responsible for the fluid’s white color. Thus, clear semen has low levels of sperm.
  • Mature and older men have a more viscous and milky semen or sperm compared to younger males. This is because a boy’s reproductive system is still developing and the sperm production has just started.
  • The frequency of ejaculation can also negatively affect the semen. Men who ejaculate multiple times per day will have watery or clear semen because the body is still recovering from the initial semen discharge.

Clear Semen Diagnosis

If your semen is consistently watery or discolored, you may need a semen analysis test. This test used to check the health of your sperm and semen. The test will check for, among other things:

  • volume of semen from an ejaculation
  • liquefaction time, which is the amount of time needed for semen to change from a thick, gel-like fluid to a waterier liquid consistency
  • acidity
  • sperm count
  • sperm motility, the ability of sperm movement
  • sperm morphology, or the size and shape of the sperm

How to Increase Semen Production

Causes of watery sperm and treatment can be vary depend on body condition.

  • Ejaculate less frequently
  • Avoid alcohol and any type of non-prescribed drugs
  • Exercise more often
  • Avoid tight fitting underwear since this can cause less semen due to the increased temperature of your scrotum
  • Evaluate your diet
  • Supplements like zinc, vitamin C,E and Folic acid that contain ingredients for semen creation
  • Reduce Stress
  • Avoid Obesity: men with high body fat or body mass index (BMI) have clear watery semen due to low sperm count. Obesity is also linked to severe damage of the sperm cell’s DNA, which leads to fertility problems.
  • Sufficient Sleep
  • Quit Smoking
  • Have Sex Safely: Use a condom when having sex, limit the number of sexual partners or do not have sex too frequently
