What is Biceps Brachii?
Biceps brachii is a two-headed muscle located on the front of the arm, and makes up the largest part of its bulk. Biceps brachii two heads are called the long head and the short head. The long head of the Biceps brachii originates here on the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula. It runs over the head of the humerus through the bicipital groove and then joins with the fibers of the short head. The short head originates here on the coracoid process of the scapula.
Biceps Brachii Muscle Function
- At the shoulder joint it assists in flexion of the shoulder.
- Therefore the short head can pull the arm in toward the midline which we call adduction.
- It flexes the elbow.
- The biceps supinates the forearm (palm up)
Biceps Brachii Pain
Biceps brachii pain typically manifests itself as pain or aching in the front of the shoulder or crease of the elbow.
- Biceps brachii tendon pain, which appears in the front of the shoulder, can be caused by overuse, impingement, dislocation, strain or rupture.
- Biceps brachii muscle pain, which appears in the front of the upper arm, can be caused by a contusion or excessive training (delayed onset muscle soreness)
Biceps Brachii Pain Symptoms

One of the most common injuries to Biceps brachii is Biceps tendinitis. Biceps tendinitis usually results from overuse from sports. Biceps tendonitis occurs whenever the tendon that attaches to your biceps muscle becomes inflamed. Bicep injuries often happen at the connection point with your shoulder. Strains or tears can develop in the ligaments. The tendons can also slip out of the groove at the top of the humerus (the bone of the upper arm) that holds the muscle in place. These conditions result in bicep tendonitis, which is a strain or tear in the tendons that can cause a great deal of pain.
Risk Factor of Biceps Brachii Injuries
- A pre-existing lack of flexibility or contracture of the biceps muscle
- A lack of muscle strength in the biceps
- A sudden stress placed on the forearm during a muscular contraction

Biceps Brachii Pain Treatment
Bicep injuries can make you pain, but they don’t require an immediate visit to your doctor. Like many strains in other joints, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen to reduce swelling that effective for your biceps brachii injury treatment. Also, getthese three at-home treatments:
- Rest: Take a break from the activity that’s causing pain or soreness.

- Elevation: Sit propped up instead of lying flat. Keep your injured joint above the level of your heart.
