What is Biceps Brachii

Biceps brachii is a two-headed muscle located on the front of the arm, and makes up the largest part of its bulk. Biceps brachii two heads are called the long head and the short head. The long head of the Biceps brachii originates here on the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula. It runs over the head of the humerus through the bicipital groove and then joins with the fibers of the short head. The short head originates here on the coracoid process of the scapula.

Biceps Brachii Muscle Function

  • At the shoulder joint it assists in flexion of the shoulder.
  • Therefore the short head can pull the arm in toward the midline which we call adduction.
  • It flexes the elbow.
  • The biceps supinates the forearm (palm up)

Biceps Brachii Pain

Biceps brachii pain typically manifests itself as pain or aching in the front of the shoulder or crease of the elbow.

  • Biceps brachii tendon pain, which appears in the front of the shoulder, can be caused by overuse, impingement, dislocation, strain or rupture.
  • Biceps brachii muscle pain, which appears in the front of the upper arm, can be caused by a contusion or excessive training (delayed onset muscle soreness)

Biceps Brachii Pain Symptoms

Biceps brachii injury symptoms include:

  • Pain in the shoulder, crease of the elbow and weakness in the arm are signs of bicep brachii dysfunction.
  • Pain in the front of the shoulder
  • Pain in the crease of the elbow
  • Weakness in the arm
  • Difficulty straightening arm with palm facing down
  • Pain at the top of the back of the shoulder (between the neck and shoulder joint)
  • sharp pain in bicep area

Biceps brachii Pain Trigger

Biceps brachii pain typically manifests itself as pain or aching in the front of the shoulder or crease of the elbow. Overstress during activities like a strong backhand tennis stroke executed with the elbow straight and the forearm supinated.

Repetitive Movements

Biceps brachii pain is often caused by repetitive movements, include:

  • Lifting heavy objects with the forearm supinated (palm of the hand upward).
  • Sudden lifting with the arm extended (raising the hood of a car or lifting boxes at arm’s length).
  • Episodic elbow-flexion load (using an electric hedge clipper).
  • Unaccustomed vigorous or repeated supination (turning a stiff doorknob or using a screwdriver).
  • Overexertion (as in shoveling snow).
  • Playing the violin.
  • Hard serving in competitive tennis.
  • Sudden overstretching of the muscle (as in catching a fall with the arm by reaching behind to a railing with the elbow extended).
  • Key TrPs in the infraspinatus muscle.

Biceps Tendonitis

One of the most common injuries to Biceps brachii is Biceps tendinitis. Biceps tendinitis usually results from overuse from sports. Biceps tendonitis occurs whenever the tendon that attaches to your biceps muscle becomes inflamed. Bicep injuries often happen at the connection point with your shoulder. Strains or tears can develop in the ligaments. The tendons can also slip out of the groove at the top of the humerus (the bone of the upper arm) that holds the muscle in place. These conditions result in bicep tendonitis, which is a strain or tear in the tendons that can cause a great deal of pain.

Risk Factor of Biceps Brachii Injuries

  • A pre-existing lack of flexibility or contracture of the biceps muscle
  • A lack of muscle strength in the biceps
  • A sudden stress placed on the forearm during a muscular contraction
  • The practice of certainsportswhich require an important and sudden contraction of the biceps or an excessive biceps stretchingregiment

Biceps Brachii Pain Treatment

Bicep injuries can make you pain, but they don’t require an immediate visit to your doctor. Like many strains in other joints, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen to reduce swelling that effective for your biceps brachii injury treatment. Also, getthese three at-home treatments:

  • Rest: Take a break from the activity that’s causing pain or soreness.
  • Anti-inflammatory medicine: use of pain killers that help in reducing the pain and inflammation. Anti-inflammatory medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen or other pain relievers are generally prescribed for bicep brachii pain relief.
  • Ice: Apply ice packs to the affected area to reduce pain and minimize swelling. Icing the affected area helps in relieving brachialis pain and reducing inflammation. Cold treatment must be applied on the affected area for 10/15 minutes every 2/3 hours immediately after any activity that is likely to aggravate the symptoms of biceps brachii pain.
  • Hot Packs: hot pack treatment for biceps brachii pain can be done before doing the stretching and strengthening exercises as prescribed by a therapist.
  • Exercise: Exercises for biceps brachii pain can help to rehabilitate the injury. It can also help in restoring tissue flexibility and normal motion in the joints. Any workout or stretch should not be painful and must involve gentle release on the stretched muscle.
  • Elevation: Sit propped up instead of lying flat. Keep your injured joint above the level of your heart.
  • Surgery: If the symptoms of biceps brachii pain do not improve the doctor can suggest surgery to repair the damaged nerves with grafts taken from other healthy nerves which helps in restoring the muscle function.
